When film director Omar Ali Khan wanted artificial blood for Pakistan’s first Gen now slasher flick, Zibahkhana, he inventively mixed gelatin with food dye to suit the shoestring budget.
The effect though was both real and repulsive. The story of four urban teenagers who take a shortcut to a rock concert through a forest only to face creepy blood-dripping zombies and other ghoulish creatures wowed the young home audience and the critics abroad. Zibahkhana , sub-titled Hell’s Ground - though the literal translation means, The Slaughterhouse - became the talking point of countless horror film festivals and even scalped two international awards. These are interesting times for Pakistan cinema. A bunch of new filmmakers are experimenting with different genres, working on fresh ideas. Like Zibahkhana, director Muhammad Saife Hasan’s Victoria Ka Ticket, inspired by writer Rohinton Mistry’s short story, isn’t the usual Lollywood masala. And director Mehreen Jabbar’s Ramchand Pakistani is based on the true story of a Pakistani Dalit boy and his father who spend five years in a Gujarat jail for accidentally crossing the border.

Doctors at the Dayanand Medical College and hospital (DMCH) on Thursday commenced post mortem of the body, which arrived in Ludhiana on late Wednesday from Maldives via New Delhi. According to the preliminary post mortem report, Ishmeet had died due to drowning. However, just hours before he was scheduled to get a state funeral, Ishmeet’s uncle Charan Kamal Singh said in Ludhiana on Thursday that injury marks on the forehead and chest and the budding singer’s swollen face had aroused suspicion that he may have been murdered. “His death is not an accident alone. It could be part of a conspiracy. We want the matter investigated thoroughly. We want a case registered,” Ishmeet’s uncle told reporters in Ludhiana. Photographs of the singer’s body clearly showed a black mark on his forehead. The final post mortem report would be made available by Thursday evening. The 19-year-old singer had gone to Maldives for a promotional event with the music company with which he had a contract. At the moment Saif’s entire family, and that includes his two children and Kareena Kapoor, has joined him in London where he’s shooting for his first home production. Alas, Soha isn’t with them. There’s nothing that the svelte Soha Ali Khan would’ve liked more than to be with her family. Soha sighs, “At the moment I feel completely isolated in Mumbai. My parents and my sister are there in London. As it is, they are potential anglophiles. They inevitably spend a part of the year in London. Since Bhai (Saif) is there for a while, they all decided to join him. I can’t be with them because I’m shooting Dhoondte Reh Jaoge with Kunal Khemu and Paresh Rawal in Mumbai. I’ve been traveling. Attorneys for Spears and her father James are expected to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom Thursday morning to give an update on the conservatorship. A hearing on a temporary restraining order barring Lutfi from having contact with the pop singer was also scheduled for Thursday. The order issued earlier this year required Lutfi to stay 250 yards away from Spears or her homes. Lutfi represented one of the strangest twists in Spears’ downward spiral earlier this year. The singer’s mother accused Lutfi who described himself as a friend and sometime manager in court papers of keeping Spears a hostage in her own home, drugging her and taking over her finances.A phone message left Wednesday evening on Lutfi’s cell phone was not immediately returned. When Imtiaz Ali, director of Jab we Met, approched Bebo for another project with former beau Shahid she expressed her discomfort quite clearly and asked him to replace him with someone else. Finally Akki was offered the role and he happily accepted. We also hear that Bebo was extremely upset with Imtiaz, because he did not cast her in his next flick and preferred Deepika to co-star with Saif. Imtiaz, who is back from London after a long schedule of Saif’s movie says, “I guess everyone assumed that Kareena would be part of it. Moreover as Saif is the producer, it was just taken for granted. As a director I have to see what the storyboard demands and accordingly do the casting. It’s not that there was any tussle on that front; the fact that we are working together again proves it.” However after a much-publicised break-up Shahid has drwan into a shell. A gentle query about his one-time friend Kareena Kapoor, and Shahid sounds diplomatic and cagey, “Kareena and I rarely talk. We are not in touch with each other. I guess this is something, which happens naturally. Beyond that I would not like to talk about it.”

Deepika Padukone unveiled the first look of her forthoming venture Chandni Chowk To China at a suburban multiplex. The film seems promising and will feature Deepika in different avtaars all through the film. Not only fans thronged to just have a look at the actress but also there was pandemonium when the photographers went to click pictures of her. Security guards behaved very unruly and created ruckus. A frightened Deepika took shelter in the theatre halls and refused to come out after watching all these. The makers had to finally cajole the actress and bring her to face the shutterbugs once again.
