Veteran Bollywood scriptwriter Salim Khan, the father of actor Salman Khan, Friday questioned a fatwa, religious edict, against him by some Muslim organizations for celebrating Ganeshotsav at their home here.

“What is the locus standi of these people? Who are they to question people’s religious beliefs? Why don’t they issue such a ‘fatwa’ against terrorists and terrorism, which is un-Islamic? The clerics are talking nonsense,” he thundered before a television channel Friday evening.

Mufti Manjar Hassan Khan Ashrafi Misbahi, the chief of Darul-Uloom Hijaziya Chishti, Mumbai, issued the ‘fatwa’ urging a religious boycott of the entire Khan family on Wednesday.

Last week, the Khan family was in the limelight when all members along with friends and relations celebrated the Ganeshotsav festival at their home in Bandra, northwest Mumbai.

The Khans celebrate Ganeshotsav every year, but this time, the live telecast of the family performing ‘aarti’ (invocation) of Lord Ganesh has irked some community leaders. Later, the family took part in a ceremonial immersion of the idol of Lord Ganesh.

The social boycott call was issued in response to a demand by Abdul Rehman Anjaria, member of the Advisory Council, Jama Masjid, New Delhi.

For the first time after their divorce in 2005, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston met at a hotel in Toronto. The celeb divorcees arrived at the Hyatt hotel in Toronto just an hour apart and shared a drink in a bar.

“Brad is staying at the Hyatt and Jen went there for dinner. She and two of her pals had a drink afterwards and they joined Brad and chatted amicably for a bit,” The Sun quoted a source, as saying.

The couple called it quits three years ago and Brad started going around with co-star Angelina Jolie. However, speculations are rife that the ‘Troy’ star may still be Friends with Jen, 39.

The family of singer and winner of reality show “Voice of India” Ishmeet Singh, who died Tuesday in a resort in the Maldives, on Thursday claimed he may have been murdered.

Doctors at the Dayanand Medical College and hospital (DMCH) on Thursday commenced post mortem of the body, which arrived in Ludhiana on late Wednesday from Maldives via New Delhi. According to the preliminary post mortem report, Ishmeet had died due to drowning.

However, just hours before he was scheduled to get a state funeral, Ishmeet’s uncle Charan Kamal Singh said in Ludhiana on Thursday that injury marks on the forehead and chest and the budding singer’s swollen face had aroused suspicion that he may have been murdered.

“His death is not an accident alone. It could be part of a conspiracy. We want the matter investigated thoroughly. We want a case registered,” Ishmeet’s uncle told reporters in Ludhiana.

Photographs of the singer’s body clearly showed a black mark on his forehead. The final post mortem report would be made available by Thursday evening.

The 19-year-old singer had gone to Maldives for a promotional event with the music company with which he had a contract. Ishmeet left Mumbai Tuesday morning for the Maldives, where he was to perform Aug 1. However, he drowned on Tuesday in a swimming pool at a beach resort.

Lover, friends and now foes. Shahid and Kareena have entered into a cold war. After dumping him almost a year a go Bebo is making sure that Shahid is never cast opposite her.

When Imtiaz Ali, director of Jab we Met, approched Bebo for another project with former beau Shahid she expressed her discomfort quite clearly and asked him to replace him with someone else. Finally Akki was offered the role and he happily accepted.

We also hear that Bebo was extremely upset with Imtiaz, because he did not cast her in his next flick and preferred Deepika to co-star with Saif.

Imtiaz, who is back from London after a long schedule of Saif’s movie says, “I guess everyone assumed that Kareena would be part of it. Moreover as Saif is the producer, it was just taken for granted.

As a director I have to see what the storyboard demands and accordingly do the casting. It’s not that there was any tussle on that front; the fact that we are working together again proves it.”

However after a much-publicised break-up Shahid has drwan into a shell.

A gentle query about his one-time friend Kareena Kapoor, and Shahid sounds diplomatic and cagey, “Kareena and I rarely talk. We are not in touch with each other. I guess this is something, which happens naturally. Beyond that I would not like to talk about it.”

The façade of friendship and amiable relations between Shah Rukh and Salman slipped at Katrina Kaif’s birthday party on July 16 and what came out in the open was hidden hostilities and unhealthy rivalry between the two super stars.

Eyewitnesses reveal that the verbal duel between the duo got so heated up that they almost became physical and on the verge of punching each other.

Salman had thrown a lavish birthday party for girlfriend Katrina at Olive Bar and Kitchen, Bandra, in which all the bigwigs of filmdom were invited. According to a newspaper, “Salman was already high when SRK and Gauri walked in. After downing a few more drinks, Sallu started picking on SRK.” Shah Rukh had reportedly turned down Salman’s request to do a guest appearance in Main Aur Mrs Khanna, which is being produced by Salman and Sohail.

Strangely for an intense love story there’s a abysmal lack of sexual synergy between the lead pair in Love Story 2050.

And that’s because Priyanka point-blank refused to kiss Harman at a crucial juncture in the plot….or perhaps ‘point-blank’ isn’t the correct term to describe Priyanka’s reasonable decision to not smooch on screen, even if the co-star happens to be her real-life boy-friend.

When asked about the kiss that the Ms gave a miss Harman laughed, “How did you get to know about?

It’s true both Dad and I felt a kiss would have been most appropriate midway through the narration when the first Priyanka character dies in my arms. Dad had written a kiss into the story here.

I was supposed to kiss her as she dies in my arms. But Priyanka chose not to shoot the kiss. We respected her decision and let it be.”

But what’s with Priyanka’s reluctance to express love in a natural way, with a kiss specially when the co-star is Harman?

“That’s exactly why she didn’t do the kiss, ” explains Harman. “She couldn’t make a concession with me because then other filmmakers would’ve accused her of preferential treatment. So we simply scrapped the smooch.”

When Rakhi Sawant invited Vidya Balan on her new talk-show Vidya said yes without a moment’s hesitation. That Aamir Khan also turned up to be part of Rakhi’s show was a bonus Vidya hadn’t anticipated.

“Rakhi recorded with me and Aamir on Tuesday. I finished my episode with her and then Aamir came in. I think he will be her guest on her first episode.And I’m on her second episode.”

This is as close as Vidya has got to Aamir so far. She feels it’s an omen that they’ll sign a film together. And she has only Rakhi to thank for it.

Doing a chat show with Rakhi was something Vidya hadn’t even thought of. “But when she invited me I didn’t hesitate for a moment. I really really like Rakhi for the way she has made a place for herself. No one else is quite like her. She has marketed herself as an extremely unique entity. I think it’s truly admirable.”

Vidya says she was surprised by the sober intelligent questions asked by her hostess. “Rakhi conducted the interview straight and simple. There was none of the flamboyance associated with her. And that really surprised me.”

The two of them had a heart-to-heart, and yes, Vidya and Rakhi are the unlikeliest of friends now.

Harman, his father producer-director Harry Baweja, his girlfriend and co-star Priyanka Chopra and Boman Irani flew into London on Wednesday for the premiere of Love Story 2050.

But as Harman reveals, there was a catch.”We left at interval. We couldn’t stay for the whole film because we had to catch a flight back to Mumbai to look into the film’s release in India.

It was really sad that I could just stay for half of my first film. But I had no choice. We’d have missed our flight. We returned from London to Mumbai within ten hours. But never mind. I deputed some of my London-based cousins to look after the guests at the premiere.”

While the Khans went all-out to ensure a massive glamorous turn-out at the Mumbai premiere of Imran Khan’s debut film the Bawejas restricted all their flamboyance to their 80-crore budgeted film.

Off screen they played it conservative and decided to have a quiet intimate screenimg of the film at Yashraj Studios.

Only close family and friends of the Bawejas were invited.

Saif’s relationship with Kareena just went to another level.

Last week while she was visiting Saif and the unit of his first production in London Kareena bonded big-time with Saif’s parents who were also there.

Says a member of Saif’s sprawling production unit, “Kareena looked after Saif’s parents as she would her own parents. And it wasn’t put-on or done to impress them, or Saif. When she feels affectionate towards people she gives unconditionally.”

And Kareena is unarguably the first of Saif’s lady-loves whom his parents have taken to so wholeheartedly and unconditionally.

Says a source from London, “Kareena has always been an extremely affectionate and warm girl. It wasn’t the least hard for her to bond with Saif’s parents who immediately took to her in a way they’ve never done with any of his earlier companions.”

Says Saif from London, “It’s true. My parents met Kareena here in London and they really got along well. My parents completely adore her, and not because they respect the space she occupies! Oh no! If they disapproved of her they’d certainly make their displeasure clear.”

Bollywood’s notorious “serial kisser” (he even wore this slogan on his tee in one his films) hasn’t yet quit his trademark scenes. But he has also moved on to something equally exciting and topical.

Veteran of a thousand liplocks with a bevy of beauties onscreen, in his latest film, Jannat, Emraan Hashmi goes into another tangle: that of cricket and betting and bookies.

He, however, remains as unfazed by any image people may have of him as by whichever heroine braces up before him for the liplock. “I don’t know why it gathers so much news when I kiss,” he said. “It’s not even at the back of my mind.”

The last 12 months or more may have been uneventful for Hashmi, never mind the buzz he creates with his kisses. We are one quarter gone in 2008, too, but the tiny packet of dynamite promises a good year yet. He not only has Jannat coming up at the theatres soon, Raaz 2 also features in his near-future plans.

The upcoming film, Jannat, plunges into the cricketing world of match fixing and betting, which makes it topical in the long seasons of cricket in India which nows includes Twenty20s and ICL andf IPL.

The seasons have also seen India come into its own in all versions and aspects of the game, including fighting sledging with sledging!

Is Saif playing safe? Not exactly in his nature to do so, but this time he sure is.

Saif Ali Khan made sure he missed yet another public meeting with ex-girlfriend Rozza Catalano, from he broke off not too cordially it seems. At least not as cordially as Kareena Kapoor dumped long-standing beau Shahid Kapur for Saif!

The actor who is on a new high at present made a special appearance on 9X’s television show, Yeh Hai Jalwa, making sure that he made his appearance only after Rozza, one of the contestants, was eliminated from the show.

About a month ago, too, Saif had turned up for a press event at the same venue as Rozza, who was simply in the next room. Was there something more to it than meets the eye? When the media quizzes Saif on ‘the coincidence’ or asks him about Rozza, the actor-stud plays dumb if not deaf.

But the question is why does he have to plan his moves at the same venue anyway? And then start ducking?

This seek-and-hide game might be grist to the mill, but is he trying to smoke the peace pipe with Rozza again notwithstanding the ‘Kareena’ tatoo on his forearm?

Or does he chicken out at the last minute, knowing he has a spitfire of a beloved back there who would chew him and Rozza up alive?

There’s a definite design to demolish Upen Patel’s reputation. And Upen knows who’s behind the smearing schemes.

“I’m being made out to be this publicity hungry woman-eating casanova with nothing better to do than chase skirts. I know exactly who’s behind these.”

Apparently a certain section of the industry is determined to hold Upen up for ridicule. Off the record he names some people who have in some way or other felt slighted threatened or rejected by the actor.

“But the truth is I’m not here to take up a panga with anyone. I’m accused of having a temper problem. Fine. But do I display my temper unnecessarily? I got into a situation with the 123 director Ashwin Dheer.

But did you see how silly I looked in 123, specially when I take my shirt off in the middle of a song, everyone laughed when it wasn’t meant to be funny.”

Upen takes a deep breath. “I’m accused of being the kiss-and-tell type. Will anyone, even my closest friends, be able to claim I’ve shared my girlfriend secrets with anyone? I’m not that kind of a guy.”

What about the stories of Upen whizzing past Mumbai’s fast lanes with Tabu? “Did I call up journalists and say I’m seeing the lady? Did I plant stories of our friendship? No!

Just when we thought Shankar’s Robot was all set to go on floors came a bad news that Ash might eventually pull out of the ambitious project given the director’s plans to shoot the film over a period of two years.

That apparently is not acceptable to Ash who cannot afford to give so much of time to a project.

There are also news doing rounds about Deepika Padukone’s inclusion into this sci-fi Rajni starrer.

Shankar and Rajnikant are very fond of Ash, who made her acting debut in Shankar’s film ‘Jeans’. Since then, the director has approached Ash for every single film he has made except ‘Boys’, but every time Ash has turned him down for one reason or another.

It remains to be seen if she has turned him down again for ‘Robot’.

We hear, the actress has already asked Rohan Sippy to start his film Happy Birthday which stars John Abraham besides her due to delays in Robot.

However some insiders maintain that Robot is getting delayed due to security reasons and not Aishwarya refusal.

The major hurdle in rolling the project, which will be shot at different locales in India and overseas, is that the areas have to be scanned from the security point of view. Both Rajnikanth and Ash come under a high protection security network.

Production house Studio 18, which signed oomph girl Mallika Sherawat for its film ‘Masquerade,’ has called off the project after differences of opinion with director Kundan Shah.

According to a source in Studio 18, Mallika was signed on for Rs. 9.5 million, a whopping sum for an actress of her standing. The source also told that before she reported for the movie’s shoot, she was paid 25 percent of her remuneration.

The film could not take off allegedly because director Shah refused to brook any interference from her.

The source said Mallika at first was not too happy about the banner’s choice of Shah as director. Then she wanted a cinematographer of her choice to be signed for the movie. But Shah said it was his prerogative as the director to choose the cinematographer.

The stand-off between the two reached such a peak that eventually Studio 18 found no alternative but to call off the project.

Efforts by us to reach her proved futile.

Studio 18 has now lodged a complaint with an association of producers, saying that though the movie ‘Masquerarde’ was shelved, Mallika has refused to return 25 percent of her remuneration that was paid to her at the time she signed the contract with it for the movie.

She has allegedly refused to entertain any call from Studio 18; nor does she respond to e-mail messages.
